Renée Bitonne’s Poitou-to-New-France heritage

Tapestry reading “POITOU,” “NOUVELLE-FRANCE,” “LE SAINT-ANDRÉ,” “RENÉE BITONNE,” “L’HÉRITAGE DE RENÉE BITONNE: DE LA TERRE DU POITOU AUX RIVES DU SAINT-LAURENT,” “QUITTANT LES RIVES DU POITOU, VERS 1653,” “UNE VIE DE FOY, DE LABEUR, ET DE FAMILLE,” and “STRIPS FORTIS IN NOVO ORBE FIÈRE MÈRE DE LA NOUVELLE-FRANCE.”

An ornate, medieval-inspired historical tapestry is displayed against a stone wall, framed by a dark blue border decorated with fleurs-de-lis, pinecones, leaves, and curling waves. Its central scene shows a sailing ship named Le Saint-André crossing the water between Poitou and Nouvelle-France, surrounded by rural French homes, settlers, forests, and families working and living along the landscape. Decorative banners describe Renée Bitonne’s departure from Poitou around 1653, her heritage, and her life of faith, labor, and family. The muted ochre, navy, brown, and forest-green palette creates a warm, archival atmosphere.
